We Once Worked On An Incredible Mansion Here In The Greater Kansas City Area That Was Originally Built In 1885!
One of the most challenging and interesting projects we’ve ever been privileged to be part of here at Midland Exteriors was a gorgeous sweeping old mansion constructed in 1885.
Our owner Jamie used to drive by the place as he zipped around the area and would wish in his heart he could have the chance to work on it. And well, the chance came.
What a striking and impressive property!
It was custom built by a man who started a bank that’s still in business in the region today, nearly 140 years later.
Now, here’s the kicker, the new owners of the property wanted to keep it as close to its classic character as possible. At the time we came aboard they were dumping a fortune (hundreds of thousands) into updating the place – new kitchen remodels, new custom stairs, new steel roofing, and everything needed to be kept as close to the original look as possible.
For our part, we redid the siding and many of the windows, which was a 6-figure, 3-week project. Not your average siding project on a single-family home!
To say it was interesting trying to use modern seamless steel siding to match a 140-year old home would be an understatement! We actually had to find special uniquely-sized rollers to get the smaller size we needed to make them virtually identical.
The windows were also quite the treat!
The owners needed what amounts to a perfectly matched stain and this wasn’t easy. Thankfully, the provider we work with in this respect has been at it for over 50 years! We gave them the sample they needed and they worked to mix stains until they had it right on the money.
While the owners were picky and needed to be extremely hands-on (which we understand considering the hundreds of thousands they were investing), the goal was to make this home last another good LONG while.
By the time they contacted us, they’d done their homework on not only us but the type of products we specialize in. They weren’t taking any chances, so choosing us was a real compliment.
Two of the neatest things we saw while we were there were:
- The fully-furnished, out-of-this-world bar/arcade area custom-built downstairs
- When we were invited into the oldest part of the house and found the original coal room that was used to heat the place. It still has old coal dust on the walls!
