Spring Cleaning Kick Startwindow cleaning

When it comes to maintaining your new windows, attention to detail is important. While our installers do a magnificent job of checking all of their work, it’s still a good idea to give your windows a simple check to make sure they are still in top condition. Spring cleaning is a great time to do this. If you’re already getting everything shined up, you might as well take a quick look.

We’ve put together a quick walk through of how to clean and maintain your windows here.
Infinity from Marvin has a full guide on how to completely clean your windows and you can download your window’s owner manual for even more information.

Cleaning Your Windows - some general rules

  • Use soft cloth, not abrasive tools or scrubbers.
  • Use clean water and approved cleaning solutions when cleaning. Many of your standard cleaning solutions are approved, but to double check, Infinity from Marvin has a complete list.
  • Never use solvents or paint thinners.
  • Always allow window parts to dry completely before reassembling. Putting screens away wet or letting water sit on gaskets can cause mold from trapped water.

Points of Caution

  • With our Kansas wind, dirt may get caked on the outside of your window, but don’t use a scraper or powerwasher to get it off. Soaking with water and repeatedly rinsing is much safer for the longevity of your window.
  • When removing screens for cleaning, do so from outside to protect yourself from injury and prevent the screen from being dropped.
  • Do not use household cleaners, window cleaning solutions, abrasive cleaners, bleaches, solvents, polishes, or other chemicals to clean your window hardware.
  • Don’t attempt to sand the surface, even if you have EverWood windows.

Inspecting your Windows

As you are cleaning your windows, take a moment to examine the weatherstrip, window finish, exterior caulking, and screws. Check that the hardware all moves smoothly and locks correctly. If any screws are loose, you can tighten them. Clean the hinges, sills, and track. If you note any gaps in the caulking, trim off loose and old pieces then use high quality caulk to fill any holes. If your weatherstrip is damaged, please give us a call and we’ll replace it.

Taking a few minutes once a year to inspect your windows for any slight adjustments that need to be made can help keep your windows functioning perfectly and catch any potential problems quickly so they can be fixed.
